WORCESTERSHIRE KOBUDO
Worcestershire Kobudo is the perfect place to learn the traditional Okinawan martial art of Kobudo. We teach Ryukyu Kobujutsu an ancient weapons system from Okinawa starting 1912. Our system train the following weapons in the curriculum, Bo/Jo (staff), sai (three-pronged truncheon), tonfa (handled club), kama (sickle), and nunchaku (two rope- or chain-connected sticks). An incredible system, that can help you gain a deep understanding of the arts and assist your way to becoming a well rounded martial artist.
As the use of weapons are involved we do require for each participant to have shown proficient self control prior to attending these classes. This is why we only allow students who have reached a minimum of Green belt with us to attend these sessions.

WEAPON SYSTEM
Worcestershire Kobudo's curriculum focus on the following weapons that are the main 5 of any kobujutsu system. With the syllabus we have in place you will also, should you wish, be capable of competing in kobudo competitions. This is something that no other club in Worcestershire has done before, a service we are extremely proud to be able to offer to our students along with a history of results.
Bo / Jo
Thrusting, swinging, and striking techniques often resemble empty-hand movements, following the philosophy that the bō is merely an "extension of one’s limbs". Consequently, bōjutsu is often incorporated into other styles of empty hand fighting, such as karate. The "bō" is also used as a spear and long sword in some of its motions, such as upward swing and slashing motion across the body as well as extensions by gripping one end and thus increasing its length as thus making it similar to a spear.
Sai
It is a weapon used for fast stabs and strikes but it also has many defensive techniques. The style includes a variety of blocks, parries and captures against attackers from all directions and height levels. Use of the point, knuckle and main prong is emphasized, as well as rapid grip changes for multiple stabs and strikes.
Tonfa
The Tonfa is used for defensive and striking type attacks, also known as the T baton is commonly associated with a police truncheon. The various grips for this weapon allow it to be very versatile with your style of attack and defence as well as reinforcing strikes.
Kama
The kama can be used either as a single half or in pairs. Both the point and sharpened edge of the metal blade are called into use, Okinawan katasuggesting that it could also be used to block, trap and disarm an opponent's weapon. The point at which the blade and handle join in the "weapon" model normally has a nook with which a staff can be trapped
Nunchaku
The nunchaku is most widely used in martial arts such as Okinawan kobudō and karate. It is intended to be used as a training weapon, since practicing with it enables the development of quick hand movements and improves posture. The traditional Okinawan forms use the sticks primarily to grip and lock
